Police Corruption in America The missions statement of police agencies usually highlight with pride the maintenance, promotion, and protection of peace, order, safety, and justified law enforcement in communities and the entire nation. Police officers are agents meant to bust crimes and get the bad guys. The police agency that the public use to lean on as the legitimate authority figure to come to the rescue however has created conflicting public perception. The misconduct of some police officers that include abuse of power and corruption tainted the good reputation of the agency overtime. The public trust on the agency has been broken and that has caused some members of the society to distrust and have doubts to service motives†¦show more content†¦Abuse of power and authority that include fraud and bribery are among the common undying police corruption practices. In 1960s, the Red Squad supposed to be secret police agents of Chicago Police Department meant to apprehend su bversive activities got involved on corruptive activities as the group illegally spied on civil rights activists and destroyed documents that would threaten politicians in power (Hagedorn, Kmiceik, Simpson, Gradel, Zmuda, Sterrett, 2013). The concealed abuse of power of masked corrupt officers has become beneficial to organized crimes and drug lords and rings particularly that police agents got involved with guns, gangs, and drugs during the 20th century. The police agencies have actively investigated police corruptions yet the drug and gang connections persisted till the 21st century. Police officers have been heavily connected, faced charges, indicted, and some jailed in connections to organized crimes and drug dealing and trafficking activities. Obviously, drug lords and dealers are making good money from drug dealing and police officers have become victims of temptations of promising financial gains. We have guns with bodies on them being traded and sold across the U.S and used for criminal activities, and we have too much access in gun stores to heavy capacity magazines, and automatic assault rifles. â€Å"Gun Control† is the term that identifies the problems we have with firearms today, and it tries to take those problems and dim them down by limiting citizens to what they can purchase from these stores. This is a good thing tha t we have freedom to have our firearms and protect ourselves from danger, however this can also be bad because letting citizens have so much freedom to buy firearms can lead to shootings in which they have. Say a person who has not committed any crimes yet, goes into an ammunition and firearms store, and purchases an automatic assault rifle with a high capacity magazine. If that person happens to have some dark thoughts, people can end up losing their life because we have too much freedom involving the purchasing of these rifles and other premium guns. However, it is important to look into why these mass shootings do occur. â€Å"Not only is there no correlation between gun ownership and overall homicide within a state, but there is a strong correlation between gun homicide and non-gun homicide suggesting that they spring from similar causes, and that some states are simply more violent than others.† (Verbruggen) This shows that with some of the cases we have involving deaths , not all of them come with being mass shootings. It is not hard for a person to grab a regular pistol and go out shooting innocent civilians, however, it is less likely that they will kill as many people as they can with an automatic assault rifle. Apology and the Crito Comparison Socrates was a great thinker and debater dedicated to truth. He spent his golden years walking the streets of Athens in pursuit of wisdom. Socrates lived the destiny that was revealed to him in the Oracle. He created and perfected his own cross-examination technique; we today know it as the Socratic Method. He was thorough and unrelenting. His subjects were often humiliated. Socrates would methodically disprove anyone he thought was wrong. In his eyes, most of the people he interviewed were blind. It did not matter if one was wealthy and influential or if they were young and impressionable. Socrates could question anyone and turn him or her inside out. Therefore, we should be respectful of the government at all times. The Apology is a seemingly misleading title. If your teacher spoke Greek, you too would learn that our word apology is actually derived from the Greek word apologia; meaning â€Å"in defense of.† Therefore, Socrates does not beg for forgiveness, rather justifies his profession. The Apology is his chance to â€Å"protest† against the authorities and make them listen to his side. Piece by piece, he dissects the charges against him. By doing so, he irritates the jurors. This is why the Apology seems to some proof of Socrates’ disrespect. When the vote came in, Socrates was declared guilty by 280 of the 500 jurors. Socrates is then given the chance to suggest a worthy punishment for himself. Most convicted persons would use this time to plea for their lives and families; Socrates had something else in mind. He says that they should reward him, as they do for the athletes, rather than punish him. The jurors came back and condemn him to death. The jurors were so ince nsed, even more votes shifted against him this time. Socrates does not break down and plea for his life. He simply thanks the jurors that stood behind him, and asks the others to open their minds more in the future.
